Crystal, Tiffany, Amber… these were some of the most popular names back in the ’80s. But only one of them has cycled back into popularity now.
Good ol’ Crystal. Or, in this case, crystals. We see celebrities and health gurus blowing up Instagram either wearing, holding, or sleeping with these little gems and claiming that they heal, promote restfulness, and even aid in weight loss. But, let’s see what science has to say about crystals, shall we? I’m doubtful that any hard facts exist, but maybe we can find some promising evidence that makes trying these babies worthwhile.
Alright, after countless minutes hours spent looking for scientific evidence or proper studies done on crystals and their health benefits, I have come up empty–handed. Well, almost. There was a study done back in 2001, the outcome of which was in favour of crystals, but not for the reasons you would expect. The experts conducting the study gave each participant either a real or a fake crystal and then recorded the subjective “feelings” they experienced during a meditation session. The majority of the study participants reported feeling similar sensations, regardless of whether their crystal was real or fake. The study then concluded that crystals can be beneficial to one’s health because of the “Placebo Effect,” which means that you think you’re feeling the effects even if you’re not––in this case, the study participants believed that the crystals worked, and “felt” their physical effects.
Any evidence beyond crystals’ placebo effects either isn’t available or doesn’t exist. So, what to do now? Let’s look at some anecdotal evidence. Many people have jumped on the crystal bandwagon and raved about the results. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West, Kate Hudson, Spencer Pratt, Bella Hadid and countless more are Instagramming the heck out of their crystal-filled lifestyles. Katy Perry even credited rose quartz for her active dating life.
All of this seemed too good to be true, so we’ve set about trying it for ourselves.
We researched various crystals and their respective health benefits, and chose a select few to highlight. As you’re reading, keep in mind that there are dozens and dozens of crystals to choose from and different interpretations of each. Use your best judgment or speak to an expert to select the right crystals for you.
Quartz Crystal is used to clear the mind, balance the body and promote health.
Bloodstone boosts energy and enthusiasm, and improves emotional well–being.
Citrine harnesses light, happiness and positive energy; helps you live in the moment.
Carnelian encourages creativity and removes energy that is “stuck.”
Aventurine is considered “the lucky crystal” and helps bring about new opportunities.
The above crystals are the ones we decided to test IRL; the following is our experience with them:
The internet told us that for the crystals to really do their job, we needed to set an intention for each one. So, we took them in our hands, one at a time, cleared our minds and told them what we wanted to receive. We then put them in a little pouch to carry around for the day (the internet said to keep them on your body and in your bed, if possible). Julia and I parted ways after that but planned to touch base later that night. What came next, I did not expect.
My day went completely awry. Literally, everything went wrong: the car radio wouldn’t work, the kids acted like lil monsters, the dog peed on the couch, and more. I started to spiral into a deep funk and got very emotional over the smallest things. At one point I think I cried over having to reset my Netflix password. It was, quite possibly, one of the more horrendous days I’d had in a while. I didn’t even bother calling Julia to hear about hers, which, I found out the next day, had been equally horrendous. Everything had gone wrong out of nowhere.
Could it have been the crystals? Did we use them incorrectly? I mean, they didn’t really come with an instruction manual!
We weren’t sure, but we decided that we didn’t want to give it another go. The crystals have been neatly packed away ever since, far from our bodies and beds, and our days have improved immensely.
So, that’s our crystals story. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a positive experience for us. I don’t want to say that I don’t believe they work––maybe our energies weren’t ready or our intentions weren’t set right––I can’t be sure, really. If you’re looking for some help in life, work, love or mood and feel strongly about crystals, then by all means, give it a go.
No matter what––and maybe this is the positive vibes from the crystals talking––I like to think that a bad day will always come to an end, the sun will rise again, and a new day will come your way ☺
